Dean Lister Brings No-Gi Leg Lock Instruction to Revolution BJJ

On September 6, 2025, Revolution BJJ had the privilege of welcoming one of the most influential figures in modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Dean Lister, to Fairbanks for a No-Gi leg lock seminar. Students from across Alaska came together for a rare opportunity to learn directly from an athlete whose approach to leg attacks helped shape the way No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is practiced today.

The seminar focused on developing a deeper understanding of leg locks through practical instruction, technical details, and the concepts behind effective lower-body attacks. It was also held in support of Limitless Advance, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for disabled veterans and active-duty military members.

Who Is Dean Lister?

Dean Lister is one of the most respected submission grapplers in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A fourth-degree black belt, he built an extraordinary competitive career that includes multiple ADCC World Championship titles, an ADCC Superfight Championship, and appearances in both the UFC and PRIDE Fighting Championships.

Lister became especially well known for his relentless leg lock game at a time when many competitors overlooked attacks below the waist. His famous question, “Why would you ignore 50% of the human body?”, challenged conventional thinking and helped pave the way for the modern leg lock systems seen throughout today’s No-Gi competition scene.

Nearly every high-level No-Gi tournament now features sophisticated leg entanglements and heel hook exchanges, making it difficult to imagine the sport without the influence of pioneers like Dean Lister.

A Seminar Focused on the Details

Rather than racing through dozens of techniques, Lister emphasized the details that make leg locks work consistently. Throughout the seminar, students learned how proper positioning, control, pressure, and timing all work together to create effective submissions.

Lister also shared one of his most memorable descriptions of the straight foot lock, calling it “the dirty thief.” The analogy fit perfectly with the lesson: while competitors often focus on more dramatic submissions, a well-timed foot lock can quietly end a match before an opponent realizes the danger.

One of the biggest takeaways was the importance of understanding concepts rather than simply memorizing techniques. Lister broke down each position in a way that made even complex movements easier to understand, giving students tools they could immediately begin applying during live training.

As everyone drilled the techniques, Lister spent time walking the room, answering questions, offering individual feedback, and making sure students understood the finer points of each position. Whether someone was new to leg locks or had years of experience, there was plenty to take away from the afternoon.

Bringing the Alaska Jiu-Jitsu Community Together

One of our favorite parts of hosting seminars is seeing practitioners from different academies share the mats.

One point Lister made that resonated with many in attendance was, “It’s who you train with.” It’s a simple reminder that progress in Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just about individual effort, it’s shaped by the training partners who challenge you, help you improve, and share the journey.

Events like these give students an opportunity to learn from world-class instructors while training alongside people they may only see at tournaments. Everyone brings different experiences and perspectives, creating an environment where ideas are shared, techniques are refined, and the Alaska Jiu-Jitsu community continues to grow stronger.

Having someone of Dean Lister’s caliber teaching in Fairbanks is a rare opportunity, and we’re grateful to everyone who traveled to train with us and help make the event a success.

Supporting Limitless Advance

Beyond the technical instruction, this seminar also supported a cause we’re proud to stand behind.

Limitless Advance is a nonprofit organization that helps disabled combat veterans and active-duty military members gain access to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by providing sponsored training opportunities. The discipline, confidence, physical fitness, and community that Jiu-Jitsu provides can have a lasting impact, and we’re honored to support an organization working to make those benefits available to more people.

Thank you to everyone who attended the seminar and helped support that mission.

Thank You, Dean

Of course, the day wasn’t all serious technique. Dean mixed in plenty of stories from his competitive career, keeping things light between rounds of drilling.

.

"My opponents put Vaseline on their feet. Who else has that problem?"

We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to Dean Lister for making the trip to Fairbanks and sharing his knowledge with our students. His ability to simplify complex concepts, answer questions thoughtfully, and connect with everyone on the mats made the seminar an unforgettable experience.

We also appreciate everyone who came out to train. Your enthusiasm, willingness to learn, and support of both the seminar and Limitless Advance helped make the day a tremendous success.

Looking Back

Hosting seminars like this is one of our favorite ways to invest in the Alaska Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community. They give students the chance to learn directly from some of the sport’s most accomplished athletes without having to leave the state, while also bringing practitioners from different academies together for a day of learning and training.

We’re grateful to Dean Lister for sharing his experience, thankful to everyone who attended, and proud that the event supported the mission of Limitless Advance.

If you missed this seminar, keep an eye on our upcoming events. Revolution BJJ is committed to bringing high-level instruction to Fairbanks, and we look forward to welcoming more outstanding instructors to our mats in the future.
