Judo, meaning “the gentle way,” is a Japanese martial art and combat sport focusing on throws, pins, joint locks, and chokeholds. It emphasizes leverage, timing, and technique over brute strength, making it accessible to individuals of all sizes and ages.
Participating in judo helps develop essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and self-confidence. It can be an effective tool in addressing bullying, harassment, aggression, and discrimination. Furthermore, judo promotes core values like discipline, respect, punctuality, strength, stamina, perseverance, resilience, and mental toughness. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in building muscle strength and improving cardiovascular health. Whether you’re a newcomer attending your first lesson or an experienced practitioner, we look forward to having you join us.
Do I need experience for this class?
No prior experience is required to start training. Judo is designed to be accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels, and many individuals begin without any previous martial arts experience.
What should I wear?
A Judo uniform is called a judogi. It consists of a jacket, pants, and a belt. If you do not have one, we suggest you wear loose fitting, comfortable athletic attire such as a sweatshirt (no hood) and sweat pants. Ensure the clothing is free of buttons, zippers, or anything hard that might hurt you or your partner.
What's the difference between Judo and BJJ?
Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) are both grappling martial arts with roots in Jujutsu, but they have distinct focuses. Judo emphasizes throws, takedowns, and groundwork from a standing position, while BJJ primarily focuses on ground fighting and submissions like chokes and joint locks. Both martial arts are effective and highly complementary to one another.
